Qatar and France have committed to deepening their strategic partnership, with a renewed emphasis on defense and security cooperation. This development came during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Doha on October 20-21, 2026, where he engaged in discussions with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The two leaders focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including defense, trade, energy, and investment.
A significant outcome of the talks was the agreement to enhance military collaboration between the two nations. Qatar and France plan to expand joint training exercises, improve land-force capabilities, and strengthen air defense systems. They also signed a letter of intent selecting KNDS France and John Cockerill Defense to assist in modernizing Qatar’s land forces. Additionally, both countries expressed interest in bolstering cooperation involving Rafale fighter aircraft, radar systems, communications satellites, and military planning.
Beyond defense, the discussions touched on counterterrorism efforts, cybersecurity cooperation, and measures against illicit financial flows. The leaders highlighted the importance of protecting maritime navigation and emphasized the need for diplomacy to reduce regional tensions.
On the economic front, Qatar and France agreed to explore investment opportunities in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation. They also identified potential collaborations in cybersecurity, transport, infrastructure, healthcare, and tourism, underscoring the importance of energy security, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
The leaders also addressed regional conflicts, including the situations in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen. They reaffirmed their support for diplomatic solutions, humanitarian assistance, and regional stability, while reiterating their backing for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In addition, Qatar and France committed to expanding cooperation in education, research, culture, sports, and tourism, along with joint humanitarian and development initiatives. These agreements underscore the intention of both nations to strengthen their strategic relationship and collaborate on defense, economic growth, and international security.
